How about something like this:

Win lead in hand (I'm going to assume E puts in either the J or T)
A
duck a spade in both hands
I'll assume RHO wins and exits a diamond (Leaving W with Hxx at this point)
I'll win the , and lead a spade towards the Q. Assuming this holds (or LHO pops the K) I now have an established spade trick in dummy.

Hrrm, eh, I dunno, I do much better on this kind of problem at the table, but I'm assuming the winnging line is some sort endplay with W to score a 3rd for the 9th trick.

:)

LHO was xxx, void, QT87x, Jxxxx.

I'm still a little puzzled whether or not I can make this - let's assume the opponents stay off the club suit.

I do think ducking the first round of spades is best however.

This was in a robot race and it wasn't practical to go to the library on this one, unfortunately.

If they promise to stay off the club suit and you read the layout (who has the K), 3NT can be made:

A
Lose spade to east
Duck heart
Win K
Duck diamond to west
Win K
Lose spade to east
Win A
Cash the spade for the double squeeze.

Scoring: IMPs

After RHO opened 3, Phil played in 3N, as South, on a lead.
  • Can you make 3N If defenders promise to stay off the suit?
MFA explains that if you guess who has the K, 3NT can be made:
A, Lose , Duck return, Win K, Exit in , Win K, Lose . Win A. Finally, cash x for a double squeeze.
  • If RHO belatedly switches to after declarer loses the 2nd , declarer can still struggle home.
    • If RHO exits with Q, then declarer wins K and finesses T.
    • If RHO exits with x, then declarer plays small and wins LHO's J with dummy's A. Now RHO is left with sole control. Hence dummy's winning x executes a criss-cross squeeze.
