If I thought I should pretend this is a balanced hand, I'd rebid 2NT rather than open 1NT.

I don't like a reverse with that bad a suit. I'd rebid 2♣, and if partner passes we're probably all right. If he bids 2♠, I'll try 2NT. If he bids 2♥, I'll raise. If he bids diamonds, I'll bid hearts.

Of course, given my result in last Friday's club game, I'm probably all wet. :P

If I hadn't decided to open 1NT, would do the 2♥ thing now. 17 is within our reverse range but not within our 2C rebid range. Size and shape is old fashioned, but so what?

I have bid worse heart suits, and no --it doesn't bother me that partner is unlikely to have a heart fit.

For me these 14-16 pointers are killers if I cannot open 1nt...so I open 1nt offshape very often......

2♥, this is the system bid so why are we trying to outsmart ourselves? I understand wanting to open 1NT or rebid 2NT (I prefer opening 1NT), but rebidding 2♣ is reeeeeeeallly bad. Aside from just a 5 card suit, we have 17 you know...

There is a flaw in all rebids, be it 2C, 2H, 2NT. I choose 2H as the least flawed. The problem with 2H is that the suit is so bad.

2H and as others have posted above, I don't see a problem with the reverse.

:) Really glad to see the 2/3 vote for 2♥. I thought, perhaps, I had recently lapsed over into a heretofore unexpected parallel universe where things looked the same but were actually just slightly altered. The joke on this hand happened on the next round where my actual partner in an indy bid 2NT with a balanced 11 HCP. Looking at a possible combined HCP count of 23-24 and no known fit, I naturally passed. Now, I don't mind bad partners, else I wouldn't play in indies, but I wasn't prepared for this player's outrage at my final bid.

Look, if you don't want to bid 2♥ based on suit quality, bid 3♣!! Your hand is way better than anyone could expect for a 2♣ rebid! Who can possibly deny that?

Now consider whether you would rather show 4+♥&5+♣ or deny that shape and I think we can start to agree that 2♥ is mandatory.

Of course some will disagree.
