Say the tray comes to your side and you pick up a pass card, then:

a. By having it in your hand, does it mean you played it?
b. By putting it close to the tray, does it mean you played it?
c. By leaving it on the tray and before/after your LHO, can you retract it if there was a pause for thought or if it were a mechanical error?
d. Does it change if it were a double or bid?

The answers to these questions depend entirely on the screen regulation in force. They are not matters of law.

Of course it depends on the applicable screen regulations. The current WBF regulations say

A call placed and released may be changed under the Director's supervision:

i) If it is illegal or inadmissible (in which case the change is obligatory), if screens are in use, as soon as either screenmate is aware of this; or

ii) If it is determined by the Director to be a call inadvertently selected or

iii) Under the provisions of Law 25. Under the provisions of Law 25A it should be noted that if a player's attention is diverted as he makes an unintended call the 'pause for thought' should be assessed from the moment when he first recognizes his error.

a. By having it in your hand, does it mean you played it?

No. It has to be released.

b. By putting it close to the tray, does it mean you played it?

No. It has to be released. If you have released the card near, but not on, the tray then it is played and it is only not on the tray to control tempo.

c. By leaving it on the tray and before/after your LHO, can you retract it if there was a pause for thought or if it were a mechanical error?

Director's decision based on (iii)..

d. Does it change if it were a double or bid?

No.

As an aside, these screen regulations are tautological, since inadvertently selected calls can be changed under L25. Fot that reason, in the EBU the latest Trials regulations (for the upcoming Seniors Trials) have had the second option deleted.
