More hcp than the previous hand but no majors. Open this? Another close call.

I would pass, not particularly interesting to me. It's a decent 11-count and we are NV at MPs. Opening is fine if that's your style.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

2344 was the worst shape for making game if I recall correctly TylerE's table, I would pass for sure.

Pass. I hate opening lite in any position with (23)44. Its a license for the opponents to compete when they might otherwise have not. In addition, my hand looks pretty defensive. If I held 4-4 in the majors, especially with AKTx, I can see a lot of merit in opening.

I like my intermediates, but we might be able to find a Rexford 3N with 11 opposite 12 after I pass.

I would open 1 if my style allowed it. For example, if I played 14-16 as my 1NT range AND I played a system where I opened better minor on my minimum balanced hands. If not playing that style, then I would pass.

I voted 1, but pass is probably better, especially in a bidding contest :P

Easy pass imo. I'd only open when balanced 11 pointers are opened systemically.

IMO _P = 10, 1 = 9, 1 = 6.

I'm pleased so many people are passing. This allows me to continue to believe I'm not becoming conservative in my old age.

I passed this (and opened the other). This one is an easy pass for me, the other one is a lot closer.

1d again I willopen 99.9 11 pointers and with 44 in minors I open 1d. No rebid problem.

easy pass of course if pard expects more.

Full hand was:

Another open or not dilemma. This one does seem more of a style issue, as one normally doesn't open flat, defensive 11-counts without majors. Even if you decide to open, you'll have to choose whether to make a 1 lead director or to go with 1, the book opening on some systems.

I don't think this is worth opening, even at matchpoints, but practice tells us otherwise, as there's a thin, making, spade game that many of the field reached and made. It's hard to tell what might happen if North is left to open his hand 3rd seat, but I believe it will be easier to reach game if you make that waffer-thing opener, so that gets the higher score.

Agree it's not the best problem, though.

It only needs 3-2 trumps, 3-3 hearts and probably a finesse. Open this hand and you too can reach 12% games at matchpoints.

so far I have seen two of these hands, one where u find ur partner with 5H 6430 after 1S 1N, and now this.

Anyone opening the south hand is bonkers. After 1C 1S 1NT I expect my partner to bid 3NT with any non 4333 12 count. This less than 50% spade game making is absolutely resulting.

1NT. This is why I play 10-12 1NT opening in 1/2 seat NV :-)

It also makes pard's life easier when I open something other that 1NT - he knows I can't have a crap bal 11 count.
