Team match. Maybe you do not agree with the first double, but this is how the bidding went...

Now?

Too late for "now?" That is what I did over 2H, and that is where we are. Maybe all they get is a couple diamonds, I am not going from maybe good to probably worse. Partner didn't double, and didn't bid 4N....he didn't invite me to the party. Whether I should have invited him to the party is water over the bridge.

Yeah - partner has less than 4 and tends to deny 3, so what (s)he has is 6+ . If I'm feeling REALLY LUCKY and I think partner has support, I will XX. In every other case, I Pass.

Now pass. Pard has loads of diamonds. He has no 4 spades, short hearts and no 4 clubs (would bid 4NT instead of 5D). Likely shape: 3163.

You might fare better in 6C. But then again, you've probably been caught speeding, so better stop low(est possible).

Do you really bid 4NT with, say, 2164?
What is partner supposed to do with 4333 on 4NT?

Depends. If KQxxxx/xxxx probably not, but with xxxxxx/KQxx probably yes.

With 4333 pard is 1) not supposed to dbl unless he's got a monster, 2) might pass 4NT anyway and 3) nobody's perfect.

Of course minors, when 6-4, are always dealt 1 suit with no honor and the other has 2 top honors. You should have known this Poky. When Nuno says pd would bid 4NT with 6-4 thats what he meant, all the other 6-4 hands will be covered in another topic.

LHO must be doubling mainly on a trump holding - he has no aces, and he won't be relying on [SP}KQ for two tricks. At this vulnerability partner will have some high cards rather than just long mediocre diamonds. I'd bid 6, hoping to find [SP]K and/or Q in dummy. Maybe they won't lead a trump.

Feels like a "one bid fits all" double failing.
Accept this failing case unless you have a bid
for 4xS + 5xC T/O. Of course other shape cases also.

what most are trying to say (and we see this type of
problem over and over and over again) is try VERY
hard to avoid off shape TOX unless you are strong
enough to bid over any jumps your p makes because
they think you have a large fit.

You are much better off bidding 3c than x. It is much
better to find out p has lots of dia at 3 level than
at 5 level when there is little you can do about it.

ANYWAY back to your question the penalty for making your
TOX is 5d X so sit back and let p stew over your dummy
and have a big SORRY PARTNER :( all prepared.

It is the little green button on the bottom right.

:P Pass and develop a quick case of amnesia before the next hand. Your counterpart at the other table faced the same problem you did and may have done even worse.

I pass, but wouldn't be surprised if partner brought home 5D. He could have something like xxx - KQJxxxx xxx and thinks he's saving over the opps' making 4H if partner has a minimum TOX.

Not sure I agree or disagree with the original X. Feels a bit heavy for 3C and the spades might go missing - but you just know the moment the X hits the table that partner will have a feckload of diamonds and not a lot else.
