Wow I am shocked it's not 99-1 for passing. I need to research that one with so many people overcalling :)

I did not overcall, and LHO preempted 3S. Now, we could no longer get to 3NT from partner's side. At the other table, this hand overcalled 2D, so his partner was able to bid 3NT over the 3S preempt.

Before posting, I figured pass was a better long term prospect. But the majority seems to favor 2D, while admitting to its flaws.

Agree with MrAce and Phil :) Not even sure if I compete in minors over the 2 though.

How did Lurpoa vote this comment up twice? (Yes, I know the number is only +1, but when I click on it I see Lurpoa twice)

Edit: I didn't post a comment on what I'd bid as it's a hard hand and I don't know what to do even after reading all the posts...

:P 2. All other calls zero. Don't tell me, you bid 2 and went for 1100. That's how the game goes.

:P Passing is so crazy that I'm starting to think this (except for Justin) and some other BBO threads are completely hopeless.

2, I like 12 points to overcall at the two level vulnerable but all the high cards are connected which makes me happy.

I dont, i would pass.

Here is a quick list of reasons why we overcall in general ( list of some other sources may vary but similar in general)

1-Competing for partscore or game

2-Showing a good suit for lead purposes

3-Finding a good sacrifice

4-Interrupting opponents and/or taking up their bidding space

-Imo this hand at these colors and with 5422 shape has little hope of making game and competing for partscore effectively. And we have pd to act in his turn and passing now doesnt neccesarilly mean we closed our door for the rest of the auction.

-We have a good suit for lead purposes but if it turns out that pd will lead, i am not unhappy with pd's lead either (if they end up in other major by LHO)

-Sacrifice at these colors is suicidal. Especially with this balanced hand so it is out of question

-2 may interrupt them a little but not much enough to worth the risk at these colors. Note that 2 minor contracts are money maker and people tend to double them more often especially at these colors. We may bail out a big number and if we make it we are not rewarded enough to worth the risk.

-2/1 overcalls usually require 6 card suit. There are exceptions to this of course but i dont think this hand qualifies for one of these exceptions AT THESE colors.

A well worded analysis which is backed up by the majority of resident experts. Looking at that hand my only concern is how much trouble I can get myself into and how mislead partner would be? The overcall of 2 looks relatively sound and should normally escape an immediate penalty and I do not believe you have misrepresented your hand to partner, forcing a major error of bidding later down the line, this obviously depends upon partnership agreements.

I am not even envisaging this leading to game, but giving partner sufficient information to raise to the 3 level and giving a decent target to defend. This should be relatively easy for partner to evaluate with the strength sitting on his left side. Should we rest in 3, I believe partner has sufficient information to make a sound judgement on that call. Far better than making some later intervention atop of a 2 level pass out.

My only reservation on bidding would be that it enabled the opposition into a game they normally would not have found. But I can see little danger bidding at the 2 level with that hand and insufficient misrepresentation's for partner to compete at the three level, should that be an option.
bridge is never always a game of exact, for those times it's all about percentages, partner and the opponents.

This kind of hyperbole doesn't really add anything to the discussion, IMO. It's easy to be definitive about what's right when all hands are in view. You might be right about 2D being the long-term winner with this hand; but only some combination of experience and sim results can really "answer" that. Many people who chose to overcall, including Justin, have admitted (or at least suggested) that this is a close decision.

I would have passed a couple of years ago, posts by Fred have convinced me this is wrong. Without the diamond ten it would be close for me.

Yes that 10 makes it an o/c for me as well. This suit is good enough considering that the rest of my hand is nothing special.

I agree with this. If you overcall 2 on these colours and it still goes 3 my pard will hang me on much less than the actual hand.

I might overcall on these colours on a frisky matchpoint day but never at imps.

Totally obvious overcall for me. It robs LHO of what is his most common response, 1NT.
