2 = + minor

Teams.
Playing 2/1 with 15-17 NT , and no special agreements about upgrading :
1. Would you open 1NT or 1 planning to rebid 2NT or 1 planning to reverse with 2?
2. Having opened 1NT , would you balance now (with a Double or anything else)?

1N is fine. I would pass. If I held two small spades and 17 HCP, I would double. I would think about it with Ax in spades.

1NT looks o.k. --better than a planned reverse with half my stuff in the short suits. Now I find half my stuff is under lefty's black suits (or lefty and I have a big diamond fit). Time to back off.

KNR rates this hand at 17.75. We must disagree on the alleged value of Ace-Jack tight and Jack-7 fourth.

1 then 2NT looks best to me..

I'd probably open 1. 1N looks like a good way to miss a 4-4 heart fit when partner passes. If partner responds 1, I will rebid 2. I expect a sequence like ...2, then 2N which describes this hand pretty well. If I'm playing reverse flannery, I will rebid 2N over 1.

From a hand evaluation standpoint, 1N isn't terrible - the good suit is offset by a HH doubleton, and a mangy Jxxx. KNR goes bananas over a suit like AKJ8x, so its not surprising the valuation is so high.

On the actual hand, I would reopen with a double, assuming 2N by partner is scrambling.

I'm with gwnn.

I think this hand is just barely too good for 1N, plus 1N can cause us to miss a red suit fit.

I wouldn't consider reversing.....Jxxx is just not a suit that I want to suggest as trump if partner doesn't show 4+ hearts himself. He'll never play me for Kx AJ in the blacks if I reverse, and the auction might time out badly for me to show these values.

All told, I am far more comfortable with rebidding 2N should he respond 1...after all, that's how I would bid with 2=4=4=3 and values for 2N, so we won't miss our possible heart fit this way. I'd rather lie about my shape on this hand than my suit texture. I don't consider my planned action to be a distortion of high card strength....this hand is better than most 4432 17's.
