I think I'll start off with ♠A and another with a view to losing 1♠ and 1♥ but still retain a chance to cope with trumps 3-0 onside. I initially thought I'd duck a ♠ first, but then I could potentially lose an unnecessary trump trick if ♠ are 5-1.

And now you loose an unnecessary trump trick if RHO has only four spades and K7 or Q7 in trumps.

I am not defending his line, however what you said confused me.
West is likely to have 7♣ and if he also has K7♥ + 4 card ♠ this makes him void in ♦. If so i don't think you can ever make this contract anyway.
