An advanced player joined the table as my partner. I am supposedly intermediate. Three club opener by east. I had no pts and passed. West passed. My partner bid 4 clubs. Pass, pass, pass. Please tell me what my partner's bid meant?

Without any agreements I would assume he had a very strong hand with both majors, and wanted you to pick 4 or 4 as the contract.

I would make that assumption, as well. But, stand by for my unknown on-line CHO to have something else

He did have a good hand: 3 spades, 4 hearts 4 diamonds 2 clubs, 22 pts. Had he doubled I would have bid 3 hearts and I'm sure he would have said four, but, I didn't... I did think maybe he had both majors, but, failed to act on it.

Regardless of whether partner is showing simply a very strong hand, or is showing a concentration of the majors, the one thing that is 100% clear is that his bid is forcing. After hearing opponent say "I have lots of clubs", your partner's bid cannot mean "me too".

something to live by-- AVBAF all vague bids are forcing:))))

your p 4c bid may be vague but it is not natural so do the best you can within your bridge
knowledge and bid accordingly. Noone expects you to know everything as an intermediate
player but we all hate to get passed in what seems like an obvious cue bid of some sort.

I would also play the 4c as p asking you to choose a major.
