You hold the following embarrassing collection, white vs red, playing IMP pairs on BBO:

xxxx
Jxx
xxxx
Qx

Don't give up yet, the hand gets much better!

Partner opens 1H, RHO bids 2D. I like to bid 2H here with most hands holding 3 hearts, but I thought that this was not enough. Any thoughts?

So I passed, LHO bid 2S, and partner bid 3C, and RHO now jumps to 4S. Do you pass or do you bid?

1H - (2D) - pass - (2S)
3C - (4S) - ????
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I'm confused... What does RHO bid? 2 (as in the bidding) or 2 (as in your explanation which doesn't make sense since you can't bid the same bid as your RHO)? ;)

Thanks, I corrected it (it was the bid that made sense :) )

Partner will have a good 5/5 with a singleton or S void. I assume you are playing "good/bad", else the distinction between a good 5/5 and a merely competitive one cannot be made.
I would expect
x
AKxxx
xx
AKJxx
or better.
On this hand you have at least 4 losers and 4S probably makes. I think you are worth 5H. You should get out for 500 at worst.
If pd has better shape obviously the odds improve in your favour.

Like Ron, i play the 3 bid as more than simply competitive, but i am willing to give partner a break and not punish him. I like my hand, and partner will be serious about playing the hand... but still... their bidding didn't give me any more hcp or any better distribution. Partner may have the hand imagined by ron, but we surely lose 2 and a so we are not going plus. Add to that, the only way we don't score 2 and 2 is if someone has a singelton or void in hearts, and that distribution could lead to big hurt in 5's. So as much as it pains me, i would pass at imps (i can't get too excited about -500 versus -620, but i will get down right aggrevated about -300 verus +100 if they are not making). At matchpoint, i would be much more likely to bid on to a 5.

Ok, so I'm no expert. But I pass. You know, sometimes, you just have to let the opps make game. If your partner has a shapey hand, then I feel it is likely that at least one of the opponents does too. 5 could get ugly. Seems like declarer's LHO in 5 holds 4 trump and may be tapping declarer right from the opening lead. OTOH, you never know, you may beat 4. Of course, I've been known to be wrong about this sort of thing, but pass would be almost automatic for me at the table.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy - but it might improve my bridge.

This was the full hand:

Scoring: IMP

p-p-1H-2D
p-2S-3C-4S
??

As you can see, 5H goes down 2 for -300, while 4S is cold. I passed :( .

(I apologize for getting the original hand wrong.)

as north, i would bid 4c at second round, strongly asking partner to compete.

so i put blame on north somehow.

IMO north is closer to 5 than south is to 5.
