3 passes to you, under which conditions (if any) do you open?

Vs. weaker opps: open, vs. stronger opps: pass. Generally leaning towards pass though.

Clear opening in any seat IMHO. Rule of 15 was intended for borderline openers.

Rule of 15 applies unless you are willing to go to the 3-level and on these cards I am.

The decision is close. IMO, at MPs, you should open with a tolerant partner. At imps, perhaps, you should be more wary because (rarely) opponents will wake up and bid a making game in spades. Tim Rees argues that, often, Pearson points are a poor yardstick for 4th seat openers, because, for example...
  • Openers tend to be light in 3rd seat but sound in 2nd seat so you are likely to have the balance of the points.
  • Spades probably break badly for opponents when you have a spade singleton or void and nobody has opened.

Under what conditions would I open? If I had a fourth seat weak two in clubs, I suppose....

Rule of 15 is one of the more reliable proverbs, even if not 100% perfect. I don't see any particular reason to believe good things will happen if we get involved.

:P Open this hand? You gotta be kidding. Conceivably at MP if I needed a board. At IMP's a terminal offense - i.e. if my partner ever did such a thing, we are through for good.

My partner and I have a rule in our county league which is never to pass a board out.
He once felt obliged to open a 9-count in 4th seat as a consequence. We still ended up positive on the hand.
The only really expensive one was a perfectly good 12-count after which the opponents bid and made 3NT!

p.s. this is not an undertaking to opponents. I can give you some hands we would pass in 4th seat.

I never pass boards out at matchpoints. I always get a bad board when I do.

At MP, should partner alert your 4th suit openers?

Although i usually tend to pass when i am short in spades this is a 12 hcp 6-4 hand. K is stiff but i never throw out the whole value of a single honor.

I really wanna open 3 , if we have a fit they probably have fit and if we lose the competition it is not end of the world, we have defensive values. But 1 is of course the normal bid if we decide to open
