I've been having debate with partners about what happens (no opponent bidding) after
1 - 1NT - 3
1 - 1NT - 3
and the question is when I bid 4 is that
(a) a potential trump suit, or
(b) a cue bid in support of partner

Most likely cuebid, though it wouldn't hurt if you told us what 1NT shows.

For me this would be a suit. To those advocating a cue bid, what do you, as responder, bid holding

void xxx xxx KQJxxxx
How will you ever get to a club contract if you can't bid 4C naturally? Bid 5C?

cuebid!

1nt can be a very wide and good range for many

with very long clubs and no support I need to pass or bid 5c to play.

typical choice that 2/1 makes often..focus on majors or nt....at the expense of minor suits.

This is an advantage strong club/relay systems have over 2/1 if the opp stay silent, which is seldom.
