Yes, you've all rightsided 3N which the two pairs in our match didn't manage.

Their auctions were 1-1-3-3N

The opposing hands were:

I was sorely tempted to double 3N with the N hand, but didn't.

Anyway, partner led a spade, I won the K and returned one, declarer played a heart to the 9 and 10, partner returned a diamond which declarer won, cashed the other top diamond discarding a club, played a heart to the Q and K, partner returned a club and the roof fell in, I played 3 rounds of clubs and we then took the rest, 3N-5.

I though this was a decent result until team mates managed to come back with 3N-6, I don't know how.

Has anybody seen more than 11 undoubled undertricks across 2 tables in a freely bid game ?

The pessimists:
1 - 1 / 3 - pass

The optimists:
1 - 1 / 3 - 3NT

The hog:
1 - 1 / 1NT - 2* / 3 - 3NT

EDIT: I see that I managed to post at the exact same time as the "solution'. Oh well.

The singleton diamond and the minimum response seem to be simple reasons to pass. I don't think it is general pessimistic outlook on life or anything resembling "resulting".

1D-1H
3D-P

Strong Notrumpers should have more problems with this hand. Seems as if the only way to a plus would be if Responder went conservative with a transfer to Hearts and a pass.

I really don't like these NT bids with 2-2 majors - with 5-5 majors partner is going to bid game in a major, not in NT. Though you're probably safe here since partner responded 1H, not 1S.

i would begin like fluffy

1d

1h

1n (showing 15-17 balanced assuming the weak NT was 12 14 sigh)

2c asking more info (sort of staymanish)

3d i think the very nice 6 card suit is enough to show here. This bid would

neatly define you as much closer to 15 than 17 having failed to bid 3d earlier

maybe even a 14 count too strong to open weak 1n.

p singleton dia ick jacks ick forget about game and try to survive.

Some partners with 5-5 majors and enough for game can show this below the 4-level and allow Opener to subside in 3NT.

This deal was played about a year ago, so I don't remember the exact hands, but the distribution and high cards are correct. I was south and a complete beginner at the time and accidentally thought 2NT meant spades and a minor, so I bid 3 and partner decided I was strong with spades and so raised. Our opponents gave us plenty of room for this disaster.
West led the ace of clubs and switched to a trump. East won the queen, cashed the ace, and ran the queen of hearts, followed by the nine and another to the ten. West cashed the ace of hearts, east discarding a diamond. West led his last heart and I ruffed, finessed in diamonds, and tried to cash the ace. East ruffed and my last trick was the jack of spades for down seven.
Partner entered the score, -700, in, but it was not a bottom board because someone went down 8.
Become yourself.
