How would you handle this hand at matchpoints: you are playing strong no trump 5 card majors - if it matters 80% of the field are playing acol

if you don't agree with the initial transfer say.

Is pass a bit wimpy here.

Thanks

Pass, with little thought or doubt. Partner only rebid 2, denying a maximum, and for some, 4-card . Responder's suit is not very strong, neither is the suit. While you might want to consider what hands allow 4 and a less likely 5 to make, it is very likely partner has strength in the black suits, somewhere we can't help and that doesn't help us.

What are your rules for breaking the transfer ?

I don't see much alternative to transferring.

I play them all, 2nt max with 3 and retransfers, jump in spades max with 4 OR 3 with a prime max and a hand unsuited for notrump (smallish doubleton somewhere) and a new suit to show 5 a card suit of quality and 3 spades.

Given none of the above, this is an easy pass that doesn't always work out very well.

In an acol field you may well be doomed but only if you don't have super accepts available or you belong in diamonds.

In Acol, it may not be so easy either.

1/-1-1N and yes if 1N is 15-16 and you have a nat weak 2 available, you've got your hand across, but if 1N is 15-17 or partner bids 2N with 17, it may not be so easy. You may also have system bids getting in the way, but most here play one way checkback 2 with 2 natural but strength varies.

Most people in the UK don't play the transfer forcing beyond 2, can be a 0 count so don't break the transfer with a non fitting maximum, is why I was asking the OP.

But arguably more in the UK break the transfer with 4 card support and a minimum. In any case, I do not see pass as being wimpy here but the normal action. It might even be that we have already won the board by reaching 2 quickly, if for example the 1NT opening preempted RHO's 1 overcall, and bidding anything higher will turn a top into a bottom.

The 1NT was in 4th seat, with both opponents passing. It is difficult to construct a 2 overcall that wasn't worth a 1 or 2 opening. I suppose a 2 overcall to shows hearts and clubs is possible.

I agree that in the absence of a breal in transfer, pass is absolutely normal.

It's quite common in clubs for pairs to NEVER break transfers, that's the only agreement that would make me consider bidding on.

Pass.

If you can show the 2nd suit, do it, if you have to, but playing 2S with
game far away and 22/23 seems like a good contract, at any form of scoring.

But not so difficult to construct a 1 overcall of a hypothetical 1 opening at other tables, which was the point of the passage that you quoted.

Pass. Depending on what partner holds, this hand could go down in 2 or make 4. No way to which it is, so just sit. The only thing you know for sure is that partner didn't super accept.

Stiff Q shouldn't be full value so is a flaw making it a 7- hand. Like others, I might consider another bid if its "value" was moved into the long suits.
