That's the way that I learned it. 3NT is a relatively unusual opening. That is fine with me, we are skipping three levels of bidding so I want the bid to be very specific and I am happy for it to be unusual. If a Gambling 3NT is rare, the 4D inquiry really is an extremely rare response to a rare opening - I can't ever remember it at the table.

Yes the Gambling 3NT opening might sometime wrong-side a contract. The effect of this is sometime over-rated.

I was taught that after 4D:
4M = shortage in this M
4NT = shortage in other minor
5m = 7222 in this minor.

Swings and roundabouts, neither choice looks clearly superior. But that is exactly the problem I indicated in the first place, the developments are not only quite complex but not very intuitive either, logic won't help much if your memory is not precise.
