It is time to send in your replies if you are sitting on them, the contest closes very shortly.. I thought as tradition has it, I would open the first hand for discussion even while the polls were open (the pro's have voted).

I bid a very timid 4H. But I am more pessimistic.
My partner will have:

Hmm. Does that mean I'm an overbidder or an underbidder? Or does it mean I don't have a good poker face? Either way I'm sure I'm guilty as charged.

Dissenter #1 to speak.
I voted for 4 clubs, what I refer to as an "on the way to" bid.
A cue bid below 4 of agreed major need not be an out and out slam try. I am just showing the ace on the way to bidding 4 hearts; it costs nothing to make this bid. IMO, failure to do so denies having that card. (Cue bidding below 5m is another story: that should be a slam try.) Partner is, to some degree, the limited hand on this auction and, if the club cue bid doesn't turn him/her on, he/she can use whatever "no interest bid" that he/she has available. (lol: at first glance I thought this hand was intended to see if people considered 3NT by responder as Serious?)
My hand is not exactly that awful, even if you make the D-K a small stiff.
My point is, 4C does not push the partnership past game, and still leaves me room to make a slam try if I so desire after partner's response.

Interesting hand. I can construct a "perfect minimum" hand where slam
has a decent shot. For example, give partner
A
AJxx
xxx
KQxxx
And slam looks pretty good. (I would have opened 1N with this hand,
but thats another story) With this said and done, parter has shown a
weak hand and there is a real danger of getting overboard. This hand
becomes quite easy if serious 3NT is available. I can simple cue bid
4C and partner will be well placed to advance. I suspect that the
hand was included to explore whether Serious 3N applies in competitive
sequences.
I know Hamman's rule. Even so, I LIKE Serious 3N and think that it
should apply here. In the absence of Serious 3NT, the risk of cue
bidding is too great and I'll be forced to advance with 4H.

I was beginning to feel alone with my 4C bid. You realize, of course, that we'll both be lucky to get more that 50pts for this.
Just one question: please explain how partner has shown a weak hand on this bidding? P could've passed 3D and then supported if the heart hand re-opens.

I know you are a sound opener when playing 2/1 hrothgar, but this really isn't a minimum! Can you really construct a minimum where slam is good?
