But that trick never works!

I, too, am bidding 4 over 2NT (and no idea what I'm opening). "Confusing bids are forcing."

That's what you get for asking about a preemptive hand, everybody joins in to share their latest Scientific Slam Gadget. We even have someone mocking a Blackwood auction, just in case.

The decision of whether to open and, if so, what, is far more important than any of the followups. Partner will pass your preempts a majority of the time, and the opponents will overcall some of the time as well. Preempts depend a lot on hand evaluation in combination with partnership style. A discussion on the relative merits of different opening calls with this hand is very interesting. I would focus on that much more than anything else.

4C response to ogust shows this hand?

Maybe it does, or 4C is a splinter.
Assuming partners 2NT showed a fit, ... and given that a shortage is
more likely than length in a side suit containing a 6 card suit, my
take is, that 4C more useful as a splinter.

But I am with DaveKok here, it is way more important to discuss the
opening bid, than anything else.

One reason to open 4S is, that it finishes the auction pretty fast, it
is a guess, but so was 2S, but if we are forced to bid again, we have to
guess a 2nd time.
With kind regards
