you have a 3315 hand, thats tricky to bid.
If it is 4315 I bid 2 Club
With 3415 I bid 2 Club
With 3325 I bid 1 NT
With 3316 I bid 2 Club.

So with good stoppers 16-18 HCPS and a belanced hand I bid 1 NT, else my longest suit. Yes, not funny, just boring.
1 NT would be my second choice with a lot of hand types, but my overcalls may have up to 18 HCPs and I am surely allowed to have max. from time to time.
Kind Regards

Roland

2C. The hand's not quite good enough for double then clubs. Interchange the DQ for a small heart then I double.

1NT.

Nothing else would seriously occur to me. Sure, 2 seems obvious as an alternative, but the major problem with 2 is that I have too many and too good quality spades -- partner is very unlikely to focus on notrump, and he is very unlikely to view his hand properly for notrump suitability.

I also like very much that third heart, for bidding 1NT.

And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

I'd bid 1NT but if partner prefers me to bid 2 with this hand it's fine with me.

What to do if partner bids 2 over my 2? 3NT, wtp?

Hi,

2C, the only alternative being 1NT,
but the shape is wrong, and depending
on the range I am slightly to strong.

With kind regards

I agree with Ken that 2C seems obvious as an alternative but it is equally clear to reject it. 1NT will get you to the best game (almost certainly 3NT) or best partscore (1NT) far more often.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I wasn't quarrelling with 1NT, and I wouldn't criticize a partner who bid it,but I think it's clear that it's *unclear* to reject the only bid that isn't a lie.

But perhaps I'm simple-minded

For the record, I personally never claimed that it was "clear" to reject 2. Rather, I claimed that 2 was an obvious alternative, offering reasons why I would reject the obvious alternative myself.

I like 1NT a lot better than 2. There are plenty of hands with enough for game but no club support where partner would pass that bid.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

DBL followed by bidding NT shwos 18-19HCP for me. Distribution is not perfect for bidding immediate 1NT, so I DBL.
