If you are going to rebid 1NT anyway you might as well show where you live. Then again, I am not going to rebid notrumps if p doubles a heart bid by opps, so 1♦ for me, too.

Finding your own mistakes is more productive than looking for partner's. It improves your game and is good for your soul. (Nige1)

I would even open 1D with 4-4 with xxxx in diamonds,
in which case you can start talking to me, that 1C has
to be better.
As a matter of fact, this is a systemic thing.
You either play better minor, in which case the suit quality
may play a role in deciding which minor to open or you
dont, and if you dont, dont do it, because otherwise you are
risking your partnership.

Unfortunately B/I know, that they are B/I.
After a while they meet a A/E, who tells them otherwise and
than they have a problem.

However, this is the type of hand where someone comes up to you after a session, gives you this problem, and then announces that "I opened 1♣ and this was the only way to get partner off to the right lead against...."
So, if you are after a brilliancy prize or want to be written up in the newspaper, by all means open 1♣. If you want to keep your current partner, I suggest opening 1♦.

If I were forced to open 1♦ on one hand, and 1♣ on the other, this would be the 1♦ hand, not the original, because
1) the singleton gives this hand a little bit more playing strength in a suit, so if the auction were at 2♥ before I saw it again, I'd rather have this hand to compete with 3♣ (assuming, for instance, that partner had made a negative double), and
2) The 1♣ bid is probably going to restrict us to only bidding one suit, so I'd rather have the semi-balanced first hand for my 1NT rebid.
Having said that, I'd open 1♦ with either hand; just wanted to comment because this post suggested that the second hand might be "more" of a 1♣ opener, when I think if anything, it's the reverse.

No. This is even more obviously a 1D opening.
The hand type that gets more discussion is when opener is 1=3=4=5 with good diamonds and bad clubs, when some people prefer to open 1D.
