There are many hands where partner holds shape with very little in the way of values that will produce game. On those hand types it is very possible I will be able to act, some I will not, and we will regain a place in the auction. Those hands are also quite likely to be highly competitive and the opps are likely to bid a minor suit game. This hand is very close to pass or 1C using a 2/1 approach but could also lead to a poor result when partner takes a push bidding a major suit game because they over value Qxx of C on a marginal situation.

Weak NT players will possibly start with 1N, close, and miss a 4-4 major fit and play a poor 1N rather than 2 of a major. I would pass even with 12-14 NT thinking I have gone for a number before with this very hand.

I like to bid, but I also want partners to know when I do open I have a better reason than this.

I try to open all 12 point hands (4-4 in the majors is my 12th point ). Not saying this is wise. Just haven't learned better (gotten killed enough) yet.

If this is passed out it doesn't necessarily mean you will get a bad result... and that is, I believe, the only downside of passing.

Give me one more Major card and this is an opener everyday of the week

Pass. When I open the bidding, my partners play me for an opening bid. I don't have one.

Sure, I open a weak NT if I am playing a weak NT. But I don't play a weak NT vulnerable.

I open, and I don't even consider myself a light opener. Many 13 counts that everyone would open are clearly not as useful as this hand.

I would open it, I don't consider it a light opener, and I would not open it a 10-12 NT at matchpoints were I playing that.

That's strangely backwards, IMO. I open this because I can open 1♣.

IMO, there are reasons favoring a range spread of 11/12/13/14 for 1♣/1♦/1♥/1♠ respectively when there is rebid impurity or other problems.

Yes, this is a clear 1♣ opening to me. I'd always open it, but especially since we're able to invite and stop in 2M if partner holds a major and invitational strength. And we agree on this opening style.

Since we have a clear winner...for those who entered "Yes," how critical is it to your decision that the hand has both majors? If you switched the red suits, so the hand only had one major, would you still open it? If "Yes," again, how about if you switched both the red and the black suits?

Open all the time when one of the 4 card suits is a major and the honor distribution is the same (all hcp in the main suits).

There are a lot of 13HCP (or even more) hands that aren't NEARLY as good as this hand. For me, this is an opener.
