3 down undoubled cost 5 imps (Butler). How should this hand be bid?

A double by North (what was West smoking when s/he bid 3?) would have worked nicely but that is not realistic. 4 is normal.

I think S should have passed 5. But North could have made it a bit easier for South by bidding 5 immediately. 4 followed by 5 might suggest a slightly more flexible hand.

Nothing appropriate to say regarding West, but:

1) Maybe 5C was not available, or North feared it might be misconstrued. If it was available, Helene is right on.
2) It is probably not a good idea to keep bidding one's six-bagger when pard has shown more than that of his own suit.

A pretty obvious pass of 5C. What was south thinking?

Why not make a negative dbl over 3H? If pd has a 4 cd spade suit you have found the right strain and now can worry about level. If pd bids 4D you correct to clubs. If pd passes it is your lead.

Partner passes with AJ10, xxxx, Kxxx, KJ, 3H bidder had xx, QJ109xxx, AJxx they made 2 overtricks with 6 solid, that's why you don't double, it grossly misrepresents your hand.

I don't agree with Helene here, a jump to 5C is completely off because you can so easily have a slam.

South made a common mistake for beginners.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
