Chamaco's posting about a book of Ruben reminded me that I would like to read his booklet "The useful space: transfers in reponse to overcalls", but can't find it anywhere. Or any web resource about the same topic, of course.

I think it was published as a set of articles on "The bridge world", I ignore anyways the numbers and years
"Bridge is like dance: technique's important but what really matters is not to step on partner's feet !"

Transfer advances are very simple. Just rotate bids from cue-bid up to support 1 step down (skipping NT).. e.g.
(1C) 1S (pass) ...?
2C = diams
2D = hearts
2H = spades, good hand (a "cue-bid")

If the overcall is on the next suit, there's no free space:
(3H) 3S (pass) ...?
4m = natural
4H = spades, good hand (cue, but given in their suit as cues usually are)

Scheme valid up to whatever level you want:
(4S) 5H (pass) ...?
5S = clubs. Followed by 6H is grand slam try with club suit
6C = diams. As above
6D = hearts. General grand slam try with whatever you want (say, with spade void if you like)
6H = not encouraging to 7

Transfer advances are technically FAR superior than natural advances. Their only "flaw" is they don't come up as often as you'd like, and even when they do come up, they don't always make a difference. Which is why most expert still use natural advances.

I suspect Ruben's transfer advances are much better described than what misho and I play (when he is around).. but our method is available on line in a word document. This is what we call "equality" and uses transfer advance principles. Dan Neil has a copy of it on his webpage at
http://www.geocities...neill_2000/sys/

The advantage to Ruben's method is lots of people play it. If you download and learn equality, you may be among the only 3 or 4 people in the world playing that... makes it hard to find partners who know it. :-)

I don't think there are any e-books available in the bridge market. I say this thankfully of course, as a re-seller of bridge books.

For those of you wanting the Rubens booklet, try Baron Barclay or The Bridge World - I'm sure their websites are linked on the Bridge Base site.
