Typical matchpoint insanity? or was I just lucky?

Typical matchpoint insanity? Or a bad bid that got lucky?

Following the axiom that good matchpoints is often bad bridge, I present this hand:



My stream of consciousness:

Should I bid?
- partner is short in hearts but did not bid - opener has a pretty good hand - likely each side has half the deck
- If it is a total misfit hand, I should be quiet and take my plus score
- That being said, on close hands like these it is much easier to declare than defend
- Relating to the above point - I hate to go +50 (or even -80) when I can make +80 or +90 our way
- I'm going to bid

What should I bid?
- 1NT has no source of tricks. That being said, LHO will be constantly stuck leading out of his hand
- 1S is likely to hit some spades in partner's hand (or if not, he probably has a minor to bid)
- the downside to playing 1S is that hearts may get overruffed in dummy - giving RHO the lead (which is bad for me)

I finally settled on 1S - which was worth all the matchpoints.

Typical matchpoint insanity? Or a bad bid that got lucky? (I' think it's the latter but would love to hear other opinions)
It is impossible to believe in individual autonomy while simultaneously believing in a right to well-being supported by others.

Sometimes I use big words I don't fully understand to make myself seem more photosynthesis.

It's an obvious pass imo, the only alternative imo is 1NT but you'll be as stuck as LHO to lead something. I also wonder how you plan on making +80 when partner has some ♠s and raises you for -50 and more against your 'sure' plus.

Bad bidding has negative EV at matchpoints. Possible less negative than at IMPs but it's still negative. So just forget about the scoring and make the normal call.

I've heard that getting a plus score is usually a good idea at MPs.

odds are stacked against you---p passed over 1h with a hand virtually certain to be short
in hearts. rho passing merely means LHO has the best hand at the table and going out on
a limb here by bidding 1s seems like a ton of risk with little downside. I am anything but certain
we can defeat any number of contracts the opps may make but I like my chances a lot
better with them playing hearts (even at 1 level) than pretty much any other contract they
may come up with short of the 5 level. That's a ton of risk for what kind of reward are we
hoping for??

If for some reason you feel you need a top I suppose 1s is the best of a bad lot of choices
and you might as well bid it because it is highly unlikely sitting at 1h is going to win the event
(while bidding may easily lose it so I hope your estimating skills are superb).

1s has another purpose--If p is throwing away mp due to being lazy If they ask about it you can
always say you were trying to give them a wake up call (I think that is safe under zero
tolerance:)))))))))))))))))))))))
