This was our auction. 3D was a limit raise.

Who should do what differently?

We've been in worse contracts but perhaps North's 5 was premature and he might pass 6 leaving the final decision to South.

Are you serious? south makes a limit bid, north makes a sing off, south then bids once more without any rights but then north bids even more!.

This bidding makes no sense.

@ Fluffy -

Normally after 1D 3D limit, North would look for 3NT. The fact that he didn't suggested extra shape and probably good trumps. Assuming opponents aren't lunatics, how many off do you think 5H is going to be?

What bids would you make differently?

I don't understand 5. North makes a grand opposite a perfect subminimum. Why wouldn't he try at least for small slam?
Is there no way he can show spade shortness?

Yes, he could bid 4S. I don't know why he chose not to make that call - it would be the call I would've made.

I don't like 3, but you normally don't have much shapy raises with both minors available so it cannot be blamed.

5 is by far the worst bid giving up a likely slam and a possible grand, Arend explained it pretty well.

The next bids are inconsistent with previous ones, but it is because previous bids were bad (specially 5). Given this set of hands I would always want to play 7 over 6X wich will go 800 at most, and often only 500.

All the blame goes to North's bad bidding here. (Well ok we can also blame West for holding the K  )

North has a 9 trick hand and has just received a limit raise from pd and all he can do is bid 5?!! Surely he should make a slam try. Then after not making a slam try, North commits to a grand on the next round!
