Playing Precision, match points :

My hand : KQxxx KQxx Kx Qx Partner opens 1D (could be short) and I knew we were going to game...For whatever reason , even unknown even to me, I bid 1H. (actually I bid 1H on the off-chance partner would bid 1S).. Partner bids 1NT so I now know she is 14-15. I bid 2D which is game force asking if she has 3 Hearts (we play a version of XYZ). She bids 2S and now I know she is 4-4 in the minors, Axx in Spades and has 2 Hearts. I take it to 4 Spades and we get a top board. My hand comes down as dummy and my partner and the opponents all look at me like I am crazy (why didn't I bid Spades first, they wondered)

It was the last hand of the night and I apparently slipped up, but since I knew I wanted to go to game, I just wanted to be the Captain and take control. Is there a downside to what I did ?

The downside is if partner bids 2H. You would be doing very well if you somehow convince partner that you should be in spades if she is 3-3 in the majors or if she bid 2NT with 32(35) or 3244(edit: 3 spades duh).

I think I got lucky, although with 3235 or 2344 distributions, she likely bids 1NT with 14/15 points. with 10 to 13 HCP and those distributions, she opens 1NT

These two statements seem contradictory.

In the back of my mind, had she bid 1S, I was thinking of looking for a thin slam.....

Not sure where the contradiction is...I was going to take control of the auction and take it to game and just needed to find out information on her hand (and didn't feel any need to share my hand information to the opponents)

Having said all that, next time I bid 1S..

The bidding should have gone...1D- 1S -1NT -2D -2S -4S

Those always win. I once did the same error into 6H on our 4-3,
not 6S on 5-3, but H:3-3 and a S-ruff made.

I don't see why you don't have as much control if you just bid 1.

I think the problem comes about if bidding goes 1D by her , 1H by me, 1NT by her (showing 14-15), 2D by me (game force), 2H by her (showing 3 Hearts)......How do we get to 4 Spades ? If I bid 2S at this point, what is she to think ?
