This is the fourth time in three days I have made 3NT because a Cappelleti bid drew me a road map, and the second strip squeeze.

I don't see any realistic way to make it without West's 2 bid.

Spade lead, diamond finesse, second diamond trick, then four rounds of clubs. West has to discard down to KJ, or else a heart toward the queen ends the hand. The you feed him the K.

How would you have played it without the 2 bid? I can't see any line other than the one you took.

And suppose that the North and East hands were swapped, so that EW make twelve tricks in spades. How would EW get to game without the 2 bid?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

given West can't count (small spade at trick 9) I'm not sure why this is in expert forum

reminds me of a video that Fred did where he had to keep his two medium spades in order to prevent the opponents (I think Meckwell) from underplaying the 3 to partner's 4

If East showed his count, West can exit with a small after taking A.

No, because then declarer has 9 tricks.

2 spades, 2 diamonds, 1 heart and 4 clubs.

The same is true for those of you who duck the K at trick 9.

Declarer erred by discarding the S9 rather than a red card. So the defence did have a chance.

Apparently there was a smudge on the road map.

what's cappeletti got to do with anything? I mean, I don't like the convention, but I won't play without some means of showing both majors, and I am never passing as West. You can have your occasional 'road map' and I'll have my frequent pickups on boards where we find our fit.

Even so, it was well done to find the key to the hand.

I would hate not to be able to show the majors with that nice West hand. While sometimes you'll get buried and sometimes there's an information leak (that turns out not to matter here) more often it will allow you to compete effectively.

East needs very little other than a trump fit to make 4M here

Try showing the majors with 5-4 or even 4-4 (or 3-3 if you're really feeling frisky) once in a while and watch declarer get it wrong. Cuts both ways.

I haven't figured it out.

How does one access this code to post a board?

TIA

From the BBO web client, choose "export deal" and "handviewer link". Or get a link from www.bridgebase.com/myhands, get the movie link. Paste link into browser address bar and go there. The tinyurl thing will redirect/expand to a full URL that has all that code in there in the browser address bar. It will be [someurl?...&lin=... ]. Copy all the stuff starting with "lin=" to the clipboard to use in your post.

Paste into your post. Replace "lin=" with the
[hv=
hand viewer link opening tag. At the end, close off the tag with the ']' close bracket, then 400|300[/hv] This part gets the size of the picture to a reasonable pixel dimension and closes the tag. So it's:
[hv=(stuff you copied from browser address bar after lin=)]400|300[/hv]

in your post.

You can hack the stuff you copied to remove the played cards if you want, & remove/change player names. If there is an RKC Blackwood sequence or something with a robot, you have to replace the '[' and ']' characters in the URL (used in the description of blackwood) with '%5B' & '%5D', the hex for the bracket symbols, or the board parser will get confused thinking the brackets are the end of the hv tag and garble the diagram past those bids.

If you are trying to compose something that wasn't a board played on BBO, use the hand editor button on the board software, the picture of a spade on the far right of the toolbar.

Honestly Flannery is good. You gotta make all the systemic adjustments to use the negative inferences though.

Don't understand tinyurl.

Can access the traveller.

Don't understand how to do that.

You don't have to do anything. When you put the "tiny" URL into your browser address bar, it automatically changes into the corresponding long URL. So if you click on a tiny URL link, you go to a page with another (usually much longer) actual URL.

From the traveller just select the "movie" link (not the LIN link). There is no tinyurl involved if you are going through the myhands site. Once the movie link opens you have all the code in the address bar, just copy the stuff after the lin=.

If you are using the BBO web client, and hit export deal -> handviewer link, you get a popup using a tinyurl, that's what I was referring to. Copy/paste that tinyurl to the browser bar, go to the link and it will expand to something similar to the movie link.

Today's Cappelleti hand. I unfortunately have let a number of these disappear, including another nice strip squeeze. It did involve a very difficult to see defensive error (Cap. bidder's partner leading 9 from 954 rather than the 4, which enable a J8 tenace to develop over the Cap. bidder at the end), but the hand was certainly down at 3NT without the Cap. bid.

As David Bird showed (at least arguably) in his books on leads, even an expert's opinion of a proper play can be quite wrong in a quantitative sense. People tend to react to highly visible events -- in this case, having a great result showing a 2-suiter over a strong 1NT, while ignoring more subtle bad results it might cause. Just look at how afraid people become from an airline crash while blithely continuing to talk on their cellphone in their car, something much more likely to kill them.

Anyway, lacking any better quantitative method, I'm keeping track of Cappelleti hands from BBO games. These are admittedly not expert level play in most cases, but still, I can imagine a good player looking for partner's minor instead of showing the spades here.

The hand was down 2, -100 for a flat top. Down 1 would have also been 100%.

Cap hand #5

On another subject, does anyone know if there is a way to export a BBO saved hand directly to the forum, rather than having to link it or recreate it in the forum hand editor?
