North thinks South should have bid 2 4th suit game forcing after the 2 bid

and South thinks North should have bid 2 to show 6 hearts and north should pass 3NT no matter which way it is bid

Imps or MP?

I prefer 3N to 4SF with S's hand. However, I do think he could improve the auctionthrough some combination of the two actions:

1. Establish a gameforce with his first bid by bidding 2m.

2. Pulling 4H to 5C (at matchpoints this is a harder call)

North certainly shouldn't bid 2 but probably 4 is a better call than 4.

I don't feel strongly about whether S should bid FSF or 3NT but it is good to have this discussion. Agree whether 3NT shows heart tolerance or not, and then both partners stick to their agreement in the future.

Both are wrong! But S more :)

S (esp. at IMPs) could probe a bit more before committing to 3NT. At matchpoints the bid comes more easily. So N is somehow not too wrong.

But S shouldn't blame N for the 2C bid. N was right to bid 2C (but should pull out 3NT to 4C, not 4H). And there is no such thing as a "SYM" 3NT (shut your mouth): N can pull out with undisclosed shape or strength.

my opinions in auction order:

1 is obvious. 2 or 2 instead would be just plain wrong.
2 is obvious. Arguing for 2 is silly.
3NT is fine; using 2-fsf tends to suggest five spades, seeking a 5-3 fit.
Arguing that 3NT bars partner is also silly.
North should bid 4 instead of 4.
South should bid 5 instead of his final pass.

How about 4C over 3NT, this shows the 65.

Suggest
1 - 2
3 - 4 (minorwood)
4N - 5

I'd almost always choose 2/1 over 1 with GF values. The suit will not get lost.
Of the two minors I'll steer toward even with an inferior suit because it allows more room. Partner will rebid with 4 in most cases.
The splinter 3 takes less space too - you might choose 3 as the splinter to relieve partner of any distraction if they hold a 4-card suit.
Minorwood (or Redwood) reveals 2 with Q. Stopping in 5 seems straight forward.
Be the partner you want to play with.
Trust demands integrity, balance and collaboration.

100% agree with every point above.

I disagree with every point both North and South make in the original post.

I guess that makes them both wrong? :)

both, as usual. 1st mistake was using 2/1. 2nd mistake was 1 s. after immediate 2 c response, even 2/1 players will often get to right contract.
