I've opened an 8-count club-spade two suiter with 1♣ once, but that hand also had two voids. This one doesn't quite cut it.

Brink - Drijver claim, on their WBF CC, that 1C shows 12+ hcp if unbalanced, lol.
It doesn’t surprise me that they opened. Iirc correctly, they are aggressive bidders. Plus at that stage, their opps probably know their style and pay no attention to the misleading and inaccurate CC. Besides, extreme shape excuses a lot of deviation from stated ranges.
What’s more important than whether one opens or passes these hands is whether partner is in on the joke. I don’t think one can ‘prove’ anything by one or even a few hands. Note that the result would likely have been 4S by north had south passed, so there can be no suggestion that the 1C opening chosen at both tables had any effect. North has a clear third seat favourable vulnerability opening imo.

They are aggressive bidders, but their one-of-a-suit openings are generally sound. (Rule of 20-ish, say.)
And on board 28 here Bas Drijver went to the opposite extreme (IMO) and passed in the following position:
