Bottom 5 Mea Culpa

Bad day, huh? I gather you don't open 1n with 5 card majors? This looks like a 1n opener to me. The 5 card suit is balanced by the questionable Jxx, so I'd call it a balanced 14. If you feel it was too strong to open 1n, I think you are compelled to double.

I tend to agree that this should have been opened 1N, just seems a bit meh for an upgrade. but not sure why there's not an option for 3D

Also would have opened 1NT. I probably pretend I have one more point and bid 2NT now to rightside the club stopper for 3NT.
edit: ah, that's an insufficient bid! Double it is then.

I don't see any problem. Didn't the bidding box have a 3♦ card?

3♦ belatedly included in the poll.
I judged the hand to be too strong for a 1N opening bid.
Over 3♣, 3N would have been the winning action.
3N, making with an overtrick was the result at all other tables.
I passed. Partner bid and made 5♦ for a zero matchpoints,

Late to the poll.
I would not have upgraded and I am an aggressive upgrader into and out of notrump ranges. Here, the lack of spots and, in particular, the lack of any texture in the spade suit, make me stay with 1N.
However, that is hardly the reason for the bottom. That reason rests with the refusal to 'support with support'. We have Jxx in a suit known to be at least 5 cards long. So the club K seems ill-placed. So what?
As for the votes for the 'dsip' double: please....wtf is that about? We resort to the dsip double when we lack primary support for partner. We do NOT use it when we have such support.
Arend nailed it: 3D elicits an obvious 3H and then we have a trivial 3N. Partner would be forgiven, perhaps, for moving over that, but we should end up in 4N, not 5D, should he do so. From his perspective we might have a play for 6D, but at mps I'd expect a reluctant pass: his hearts are dubious for slam.

I bid 3d then looked to see what all the OTHER votes were all about. Deduced they were probably 3d bidders that did not have that choice in original poll. It is amazing how helpful a simple raise below game can facilitate the bidding by allowing partner to work with more information:)))))))
