He essentially misguessed twice, he could have finessed the club the other way, or could have assumed south had 4 diamonds and ♠J rather than K. I don't think playing for either of those is better than what he did.

It's difficult to be objective with all hands visible. I think winning the ace, cashing two rounds of diamonds and returning a heart is the best way to test the defence. But if NS play well you'll just have to fall back on the club finesse (and you have to choose early whether to pitch a spade or a club from the West hand, so you might have to commit to finessing North for the club queen).
