Me and my partner are currently trying out Hexagon 2s with some adjustments. This hand came up while playing...

- A
- AQ72
- AQ32

A 2 bid promises an ACOL style 2 opening with typically 5+ of the suit if strong. I chose to handle the hand as being balanced although the singleton A was quite an evil card. I downgraded it to a 20-21 NT hand and opened 2D. How would you all handle this hand using Hexagon or a more standard system? Was my treating this as a 20-21 NT a bad choice or should I of chosen to treat it as a strong 5 card diamond hoping for a bid by partner? The hand does need a good bit of support though from partner. Possibly opening 1D would be acceptable as well?

Thanks for the link, but still interested in what people have to say about this hand. I would rather have the linked hand over this hand any day.

The important parts of the link, IMO, were that 4X1 hands suck in the auction and in the play. I would be content to open 1D in a natural system and treat the hand as a maximum unbalanced 1-bid.

I would open it as a balanced 22 count

Opening 1 or treating as balanced are both fine. But don't downgrade. If partner has as little as Kxxx in spades, there are nine tricks before even taking a finesse. If there is a nine card fit anywhere your hand is huge. It is closer to an upgrade than a downgrade.
