Yes- very bad better to bid NT defence also North's (GIB) leaving in the double with nothing. Hard to believe they use X for penalty over strong non-trump. Most human defences don't use that double.

GIB plays Cappelletti (or Pottage or Hamilton)- so X = Penalty Double. It's not a good defense, because it's rare that you ever have that hand. Good pairs also have a way to escape to a suit for less damage, so nobody decent plays it. Barring that, North should probably pull the X with no points and good shape (2 looks to be -1 or making)

Not in this case. This is from an Automated Express tournament; in those, all players are required to play SAYC. Of course, in SAYC, Double is still Penalty, but not because it's part of Cappelletti.

I guess I misunderstood how this tournament works. I thought GIB would be playing SAYC, since the description says "Everyone uses SAYC", but that's not the case, so Cappelletti is on.
